Comic care: keep your books reading-fresh for decades

A comic is paper and staples — it ages whether you read it or not. The good news: protecting one is cheap and takes minutes. The difference between a book that holds its grade for decades and one that quietly slides down the scale is almost entirely habit.

1. Handle clean and slow

Most damage happens in the hand. Wash and fully dry before handling, work on a clean flat surface, and turn pages from the corner rather than the edge. Never fold a cover back to read — that's the fastest way to crack a spine.

2. Bag it

A clean, properly sized sleeve blocks dust, fingerprints, and humidity. For long-term storage, choose archival-quality, acid-free bags rather than cheap polybags that yellow and off-gas over time. Replace bags that have gone cloudy or brittle.

3. Board it

An acid-free backing board keeps the book rigid and flat inside its bag. Without one, covers bow and corners bend under their own weight. The board goes behind the comic, smooth side against the back cover.

4. Store it right

Upright in a snug short box is best for most collections — it avoids the crushing weight of a tall flat stack and lets you flip through without bending books. Keep boxes:

• Cool and stable — heat accelerates yellowing.
• Dry — humidity invites foxing, warping, and rusted staples.
• Dark — light fades covers permanently.
• Off the floor — away from flood risk and concrete moisture.

5. Display carefully

If you frame a book, use UV-filtering glazing and keep it out of direct sun. Better still, display a reading copy and keep the high-grade one bagged and boxed. Sunlight is the one kind of damage you can't undo.

Why it pays off

Grade drives value, and these habits protect grade for almost no money. A book stored well today can still present beautifully in twenty years.
